For many nonprofits, technology can be the magic wand that helps free up time to focus on meaningful work. Earlier this week, Social Solutions announced the first two recipients of matching grants, using funding thanks to an investment from Ballmer Group, to provide access to our case management technology. Ballmer Group, the philanthropic organization led by Connie and Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s former CEO, invested $59 million earlier this year to help facilitate accelerated product development while making our Apricot software platform more accessible to nonprofits.
How Did You Find These Organizations?
When choosing the matching grant recipients, our team looked at communities where there’s a need for additional support systems in the K-12 sector. This led us to San Antonio, where there’s a high percentage of at-risk students and opportunity to better address some of the needs surrounding their education. Thanks to the matching grants, we will cover 50 percent of the Apricot 360 licensing costs for San Antonio-based PROSPERA Housing Community Services (HCS) and SA Youth.
Rather than providing funds designated to certain program areas, the matching grants will give both organizations much-needed resources and data to better serve their communities. Using Apricot, these nonprofits will be able to streamline their data entry and participant tracking. The software will also provide much more robust reporting. This will help both PROSPERA and SA Youth measure outcomes to help tell their impact story and secure more funding from more engaged investors.
We selected PROSPERA because of its commitment to helping families in more than 19 cities across South Texas achieve brighter outlooks. How do they do that?
PROSPERA has provided safe and affordable housing with supportive services since 1993. The organization was formed out of a shared vision to provide a starting point for pursuing life goals while addressing the depleted availability of high-quality, affordable housing for low-income individuals and families.
PROSPERA’s vice president of resident services, Carmen Hancock told the San Antonio Express News that with help from the Apricot 360 software, the organization aims to create a “well-rounded picture of each youth and how they’re doing in and out of school.”
Why SA Youth?
Social Solutions selected SA Youth for their tireless efforts to engage San Antonio’s high-risk youth and inspire them to fulfill their potential personally and within their community.
The organization helps to develop the character, strengths, talents, and skills of San Antonio’s high-risk urban youth through fun and safe experiences, positive learning environments, and holistic programs. Its primary focus is helping young people achieve academic success and providing each child with the tools necessary for lifelong success.
In the same San Antonio Express News article, Asia Ciaravino, president and CEO of SA Youth, said that without the Apricot 360 software, the organization “would be back in the Dark Ages.”
What Do I Need to Know About Apricot 360?
Using data science and predictive analytics, Apricot 360 uses a nonprofit’s data to help provide actionable insights and recommendations that allow team members at the nonprofit to make more informed decision when helping individuals. The outputs of the models are meant to empower nonprofit teams with insights tied directly to a single person their program is assisting.
For example, SA Youth works with a large population of kids who may have fallen behind in school. Instead of reporting that a specific student’s attendance is dropping, Apricot 360 enables SA Youth to report on the student’s behavior and actions that potentially correlate to the declining attendance. The data can then be used to make decisions about how to help the individual stay on track.
Apricot 360 provides greater and more granular visibility into programs. It also allows nonprofits to proactively reach out to specific individuals who may need extra support. The software empowers organizations to better serve every individual client and is a valuable tool for any nonprofit looking to help more people and do more good.
How Will the Software Help Both Recipients? Don’t PROSPERA & SA Youth Have Completely Different Missions?
While the organizations do have different missions, the beauty of Apricot 360 is that it’s not tailored to any specific nonprofit sector. Collaboration across a variety of organizations equates to more data, which helps organizations make informed, data-driven decisions. This gives each organization a more comprehensive picture of the individuals they serve each day.
With its Apricot 360 licenses, PROSPERA can now:
• Leverage data for more holistic, comprehensive reporting – a vital factor in securing funding
• Identify risks and take action to get ahead of issues proactively
• Tackle the intersection of housing and healthcare by using data to monitor and manage the 80 percent of factors affecting health that occur outside of the clinical setting
• Focus on providing education support to at-risk children by proactively tying eviction notices to families who might have to move suddenly
For SA Youth, Apricot 360 enables the organization to:
• Facilitate the process of gathering and synthesizing data with other school districts to better monitor outcomes around attendance, grades, and other services
• More effectively track where students in the YouthBuild program are coming from, the services provided to them, and ultimately, where they end up
• Create a more holistic view of the students that the organization serves, and make data-driven decisions to provide more individualized support
Will Social Solutions & Ballmer Group Issue More Matching Grants?
Yes! We’re glad you asked. Ballmer Group’s investment in Social Solutions will provide additional matching grants to other organizations that want to leverage the power of data and analytics to achieve common goals.
