Nonprofit Maturity Model Stage 3: Measuring Outcomes
At this stage of the Maturity Model, your nonprofit’s data collection efforts should be in good shape. You should be counting outputs at a high level and seeing improvements in the way you are delivering service because of that. The best news of all is that your funders can finally see an improvement in your reports and overall data. This, in turn, gives them and you much more insight into your operations and service delivery.
As you look at your data, which should be stored in a cloud-based system at this point, you can measure, tracking, and make short-term decisions based on what you see. With the data you’re collecting, you can now measure and report on rudimentary trends that can be seen. You can also identify program outcomes at this stage, which is key when trying to secure pervasive, diversified funding for your organization.
Unfortunately, there are pain points associated with this stage that can seriously stunt your organization’s growth to high performance. Since you’re just now seeing the trends of your outputs, you still can’t see an end-to-end view of your programs and service delivery. On top of that, there can be issues present due to data quality and data integrity, both of which are important for getting the most accurate data in real time.
The biggest pain point that is present in this stage, however, is the inability of your organization to make proactive, data-driven decisions. Organizations at this stage are very reactive and that can cause gaps or lapses in service delivery for your clients. This is a direct result of the pain points above and it can be difficult to overcome.
But we have the tools that can help!
Nonprofit Maturity Model Stage 4: Managing Outcomes
Congratulations, you’ve reached the last stage of the Nonprofit Maturity Model! At this stage, your organization should be using data in an optimal way. You’ve mastered counting outputs and measuring outcomes, and it’s time to take the next step forward. Here, your leadership is using collected data to make informed, real-time decisions that benefit your programs and clients. Also, at this stage, your organization should be data agile and can easily use data, and your cloud-based software, to course correct quickly.
Along with that, your organization has reached a level of high performance that allows you to continuously ensure that your organization is using your resources in the most optimal way to drive towards your desired outcomes. This is all possible because of all the hard work you and your organization’s leadership were committed to driving your data usage forward.
This stage has its own sets of pain points that need to be addressed, however. Primarily, you are still likely to see data errors, even with your cloud-based software. It’s important to practice constant vigilance to avoid those mistakes and maintain data integrity. Along with that, it’s important to continuously make sure that your system has functionality in place that will help you perform at the high level you’re currently at.
And lastly, it’s not uncommon for you to still have inefficient processes in place at your organization. They were most likely grandfathered in, but they are slowing down you productivity regardless. Those inefficiencies can keep your from your goals and take resources away from places where they are needed.
