International Women’s Day 2022: 16 organizations working toward breaking the bias

International Women’s Day is a global day held annually on March 8^th to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Each year, groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality worldwide. The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field. 

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we recognize the following organizations, who are also Social Solutions clients, that are working towards a gender equal world. We encourage you to check out these organizations and consider donating to help them accelerate equality for all.

Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) 

Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) serves as the nation’s leading organization for empowering commercially sexually exploited and domestically trafficked girls and young women. Through cultural change, advocacy, training and survivor leadership, GEMS is committed to shifting public perception and policy. GEMS’ unique Victim, Survivor, Leader™ program model is the gold standard for organizations serving trafficking victims and survivors across the country.  

Giving Words  

Giving Words helps single mothers overcome crisis events such as car repairs that might otherwise destabilize families. After evaluating a mother’s emergency and situation, Giving Words will decide on the best course to get her and her family back on the road—to work, school, and her children’s activities and needs. 

Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis 

Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis is a feminist community-based organization providing services to women and their children on domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. They provide safety, support, information and advocacy to women and their children. 

Houston Area Women’s Center 

The Houston Area Women’s Center serves thousands of women, children, and families escaping domestic violence, sexual assault, or sex trafficking each year. They help survivors transform their lives, free from violence. Their programs include crisis response, survivor empowerment, violence prevention and culture change, and more. 

Mary’s House Services 

Mary’s House Services is driven and funded by the community to provide best-practice services to proactively and pre-emptively help women and children escaping domestic violence. Mary’s House Services operates Mary’s House Refuge and the Daisy Centre – non-residential domestic violence services – to reach as many women as possible and provide victim-survivors with the tools of empowerment to rebuild their lives. 

Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter  

The Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter exists to help all those in NW Arkansas who are not able to call home a safe place, those who are or have experienced domestic abuse, sexual abuse or sex trafficking. They strive to make all individuals in NW Arkansas feel safe, seen, home and human. 

Safe Harbor Shelter 

Safe Harbor provides the support that survivors of sexual and domestic violence and human trafficking need to overcome their crisis and transform their lives. They offer comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking, including individual and group counseling, children/youth services, 24-hour helpline, court advocacy, emergency shelter, hospital accompaniment, and community education and training. 

The Center for Black Women’s Wellness  

The Center for Black Women’s Wellness is a premier, community-based, family service center committed to improving the health and well-being of underserved Black women and their families. Their programs include wellness, maternal and child health, women’s economic self-sufficiency programs and more. The Center for Black Women’s Wellness is where passion and compassion intersect to connect women to the tools and services that move them toward physical, mental and economic health. 

The Eve Project 

The Eve Project exists to offer a new alternative for women who live with trauma due to past abuse. By bringing together a combination of therapeutic services, training and mentoring programs, and supported work experience, The Eve Project aims to provide pathways for these women to reclaim their lives, where they are thriving and working towards a sustainable future. 

Wellington Rape Crisis 

Wellington Rape Crisis was established in 1978 by a group of local women who identified a community need for a support network for women who had experienced sexual harm. Today, they are a team of registered social workers and counselors who provide free support services to women-identifying and gender-diverse survivors and their supporters. 

Women and Mentoring  

Women and Mentoring run a unique, early intervention program that supports women charged with a criminal offense by matching them individually with a supportive female mentor. With recurrent philanthropic funding over the past four years, they have been able to expand their service area to provide support to criminalized and vulnerable women across most of metropolitan Melbourne. 

Women’s Centre Waitakere 

The Women’s Centre Waitakere was established in 1983 by a collective of like-minded women wanting to bring about a change in their community and offer women and children a place to gather, seek support and advice, and advocate on their behalf. The Centre is a safe space for women to access services such as counseling, workshops and courses, food and information regarding other community services. 

Women’s Leadership Initiative 

The Women’s Leadership Initiative is a five-year, $5.4 million initiative of the Australian Government promoting women’s leadership and building a future generation of women leaders in the Pacific region. It delivers a range of learning, networking and development opportunities to Australia Awards scholars from the Pacific studying at Australian universities and institutions. 

Women’s Safety Service  

Women’s Safety Services SA (WSSSA) supports women and their children who are experiencing domestic and family violence. They are committed to helping people find safety and support during and after experiencing abuse. WSSSA has a range of programs and services over numerous sites to assist people in South Australia. 

Young Womens Christian Association of Greater Los Angeles  

The Young Womens Christian Association of Greater Los Angeles (YWCA GLA) is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Their programs include workforce development, sexual assault crisis services, child development, youth services and more. 

Zonta House Refuge Association 

Zonta House Refuge Association is a specialist service that provides safety, essential relief and support to women who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing family and domestic violence. Their focus is to deliver high-quality, innovative services to prevent and reduce family and domestic violence, providing intervention opportunities and support services to assist in the recovery of women and children who have experienced family and domestic violence.
