Creating a High Performing Program

Overview

Strong communities need high-performing human service programs that can effectively address the needs of residents. As demand for human services increases and funds tighten, funders are increasing their focus on supporting high-performance programs and organizations. But what is a high-performing organization? This track will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of what constitutes a high-performing program and will offer practical, real-life advice on how you can transform your program into a high-performing program. This track is designed to help executive directors, program directors, and front line service professionals.

The ABC of Strategy: It's About Improving Lives

This first session starts the track off with exploring the central challenges most organizations face as they embark on a path to becoming performance driven, and why it's worth the effort. Anisha Chablani and Isaac Castillo from high performing organizations ROCA and the Latin American Youth Center share their evolutions and experiences and discuss the ABC of developing a meaningful and practical strategy to improve people's lives.

From Strategy to Implementation: Measure and Manage

Ever heard that an organization's work and results are so intangible they just can't be measured? Wings for Kids decided that if they couldn't measure it, they couldn't feel confident that anything meaningful had changed. Bridget Laird shows how the after school program developed a strategy to measure and manage performance toward social and emotional learning outcomes. Isaac Castillo from the Latin American Youth Center shares resources for effective practices and measures which organizations can use as they develop their own strategies.

Managing the Organizational Change Process

Software is a tool and only one ingredient in successful performance management. Andrew Niklaus from First Place for Youth discusses the nature of the leadership and organizational changes that have to take place throughout the process — from securing staff buy-in to translating data into meaningful management decisions — and how his organization has addressed them. Kimberly Williams-Rivera from Our Piece of the Pie shares her perspectives on the change process and specific tips for how to manage a smooth transition to a performance driven organization.

Tuesday
1:45 - 3:30pm

Learning from Experience: Improving Services Based on Data

In this panel discussion moderated by Julie Russell of United Way of Greater St. Louis, speakers from the five high performing organizations will talk about ways in which they have improved services for clients as a result of performance data. Examples range from uncovering and changing harmful practices to improving staff performance and client outcomes. The panel will take questions from the audience about all aspects of the performance management process.
