Incent Content Production (Data Entry):

The first step required to effectively answer ad hoc questions is to get a rich set of data. However, in human service organizations of course the production of data is not free. The data is usually entered by the same staff workers who are already strained by other demands of their job. It’s amazing how Google and other search engines have changed our world. When I was in college, the quarterly required research paper was often accompanied by a trip to the library and helpful instruction from the school librarian on how to use the microfiche machine (… boy, I’m really showing my age…). Good Can Become Great — But Can “Not Good” Organizations Ever Become Great?

Yesterday, I spoke with a customer who is the executive director of a large, multi-service organization. During this conversation, he lamented the fact that high-performing organizations appeared to be the ones that really embraced the use of ETO and got the most benefit out of it, while poorly-performing organizations would invariably complain about the difficulty of recording their data and would see no benefits from the system.
