In previous posts, I talked about my pending trip to Nicaragua to work with a group called Orphan Network. I have to admit that I really didn’t know much about what they did, and since I’ve never been on a trip like this before— I didn’t know what to expect either. For those who have never done a trip abroad like this, I’ll give a bit of background and context around this one in particular. What has been the key to Social Solutions’ success, and what’s the problem with “Making a Difference?”

Question…Why was Social Solutions founded?

Answer:  To make a difference. The former Baltimore city case managers who started Social Solutions wanted to transform the way the non profit world works to ensure greater accountability and increased effectiveness of services for participants. As author Mark Friedman put it, “Trying Hard is Not Good Enough.”  For decades no one questioned a non profit’s effectiveness because it was assumed that they were helping people.  Why else would they be in business? Unfulfilled Promises

In my last blog post I highlighted the success of one of the neighborhoods and community organizations who were awarded one of the 21 Promise Neighborhood $500,000 grants.  In this post, I’d like to highlight some of the communities and projects who maintain a steadfast commitment to the vision of Promise Neighborhoods regardless of the status of the federal funding.  From the mountainous hills of West Virginia to the bustling, windy city of Chicago…my hope is that other communities will come forward with their stories of commitment…echoing the community-reform champion Geoffrey Canada himself…beaconing “Whatever it takes.” Read the rest of this entry »
