The youth of our nation have seen it all – terrorist attacks, war, horrific natural disasters. With all of this hitting so close to home, perhaps it’s no wonder they’re collectively stepping up to serve humanity. An upturn in the number of nonprofit applicants reflects a growing propensity among college graduates to snub the corporate ladder and move on to found or participate in nonprofit and volunteer programs. And they’re not walking into this lifestyle with a blind eye. A study conducted by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement shows that close to 85% of incoming college freshmen have community service experience prior to college. They’re earning scholarships to support their futures in nonprofit leadership. And these kids are volunteering to make a difference – not just out of moral obligation. They’re even sacrificing their precious summer vacations for the greater good. From Virginia and Delaware to Wisconsin and Massachusetts, teens are serving their communities, learning about society and helping others.
