Philanthropy is booming in the US – across the nation you can find people willing to give their time, money and offer resources to those in need. An organization in New Mexico is even gearing up to celebrate National Philanthropy Day in November. But the philanthropic bug isn’t just centralized here; it’s popping up all over the world as well. In the UK, the Brits are beginning to see a number of trends in fundraising, annual giving and private philanthropy. A Canadian man began a long walk from British-Columbia to New York City to raise awareness about providing sustainable provincial and federal funding for family support services. And an international charity in Russia has started putting forth significant recourses to offering aid to the homeless in Moscow.

Europe tries to streamline its medical services process — allowing citizens faster, and easier, access to physicians and related medical personnel. The United Way owns the airwaves — in dozens of local markets — across the US. The annual 08 campaign is now underway, and it should prove to be a successful one, based on the high fundraising goals set. And, giving the tenor of the coverage, the additional help will go far with the very people who need it most. And, from a 50,000 foot view taken in the days following the report on annual household income, this Washington Post column offers a non-partisan look at how we all might be getting poverty wrong.

The youth of our nation have seen it all – terrorist attacks, war, horrific natural disasters. With all of this hitting so close to home, perhaps it’s no wonder they’re collectively stepping up to serve humanity. An upturn in the number of nonprofit applicants reflects a growing propensity among college graduates to snub the corporate ladder and move on to found or participate in nonprofit and volunteer programs. And they’re not walking into this lifestyle with a blind eye. A study conducted by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement shows that close to 85% of incoming college freshmen have community service experience prior to college. They’re earning scholarships to support their futures in nonprofit leadership. And these kids are volunteering to make a difference – not just out of moral obligation. They’re even sacrificing their precious summer vacations for the greater good. From Virginia and Delaware to Wisconsin and Massachusetts, teens are serving their communities, learning about society and helping others.
